Mt. Vernon Family,
One of the blessings for many African American children growing up is that we have other mothers. We have grandmothers, godmothers, aunties, adopted mothers, older sisters, and church mothers, who love and nurture us. I am thankful for all my moms who are now with Jesus. I especially miss my Aunt Anne.
I encourage you to cherish all the women who have spoken into your life and nurtured you, especially your mother. Send a card or give them a phone call or visit. Share a personal story or life lesson from your mother or a woman who mothered you. Below I have shared just one of many precious memories of my mother.
My Mother was a church musician. She taught herself to play by ear on the church’s piano. My grandfather, the pastor would often chase her off the piano as he did not want her to get it out of tune. To my grandparent’s surprise mama made her debut at age thirteen singing and playing “Surely God is Able.” A few of her friends from church accompanied her. My grandparents were stunned. Growing up there were many songs I loved to hear mama play and sing. I remember inviting her to a church I attended on one occasion. I had no idea that our musician could not be there. My pastor was so glad that my mother was present, and I was too. I asked the pastor if I could hear mama sing a song I loved hearing her sing, “In the Upper Room” by Mahalia Jackson. She did not disappoint. Mama played and sang that song beautifully!
To the mothers reading this, I pray that this Mother’s Day bring you fond memories, phone calls, cards, gifts, dinners, and much joy and love. Mothers and mothering women, we love you and thank God for you. Amen!
Be Blessed,
Pastor Deborah Giles
