Dear Mt. Vernon Family,

I am deeply saddened by the events that we witnessed this week in the murder of another African American male, George Floyd. Sometimes words are not adequate to express the pain and the pent-up rage we feel. Paul tells us the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs or groans too deep for words. We celebrate Pentecost this Sunday. Pentecost marks the day that God sent the promised Holy Spirit to indwell believers, baptizing them into Christ, giving birth to the church. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. He is our comforter, our guide, our helper, and teacher. At all times we must be Spirit filled (controlled) and Spirit led. Otherwise we are casting aside divine power and trying to survive in our own strength.
