Greetings Mt. Vernon Family,
Philippians 1:9-10 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ.
Spiritual discernment is a gift of God. Paul prayed for the Philippian church that they would be able to discern not just what is good and acceptable but what is best. Good can be the enemy of best. Discernment is the ability to judge well. It is to evaluate a situation or an action taken. It is the ability to sort through and separate out one thing from another, truth from error, good from evil, the Holy Spirit from demonic spirits. A conversation with someone may disturb our spirits. Their perspective or demeanor may seem off. We may sense they are not being completely upfront. The gift of discernment is well worth praying for, even fasting and praying for. Discernment saves us from missteps. Solomon prayed, “So give Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, to discern between good and evil” 1Kings 3:9. God was so pleased with Solomon’s request that He gave Solomon a wise and understanding heart and a little something extra, both wealth and honor.
So, pray for spiritual discernment. Amen!
Pastor Deborah Giles
