Greetings Mt. Vernon Family,

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17)

The last piece of armor we must arm ourselves with is the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. The sword of the Spirit is our only offensive weapon. With our swords we stand our ground against Satan’s harmful attacks, and we attack and tear down Satan’s strongholds. Soldiers in the army of the Lord must be trained in proper use of the sword to be victorious in battle. The word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth (John 16:13). The Holy Spirit teaches us all things and brings to our remembrance the word of the Lord (John 14:26). Our training consists of discerning the voice of the Spirit, being led by the Spirit, and walking in the Spirit. Since the Spirit and the word agree, we must also understand God’s word. The two go together. So, we study God’s word, meditate on the word, memorize the word, pray the word, and practice the word in partnership with the Spirit so that we are effective warriors in Christ.
